Waves of Concern, Circles of Care – How Do We Hold It All Together?

A couple of months ago, Rabbi Laura and I began our annual conversation about the High Holy Days. (An occupational hazard for rabbis: planning the Days of Awe before the summer solstice!) Sadly, the theme we landed on has only grown more relevant. We feel the anxiety. We share your concerns. Wherever we turn our thoughts in the world, things feel less steady, less balanced, and more uncertain.

In moments like these, I hear the timeless words of Rabbi Hillel, whose wisdom still washes over us like steady waves: “If I am not for myself, who will be for me? If I am only for myself, what am I? And if not now, when?” These ancient questions lead directly to our guiding question for this year: “How do we hold it all together?”

With our brief and precious lives, amidst a constant stream of alarming news, how do we respond? How do we live meaningfully? How do we love deeply? How do we forgive honestly? And how do we stay open to the lessons from above? I have been taught the questions are often the beginning of the discernment of wisdom. May the days of awe ahead fulfill that promise.

We are looking forward to an inspiring High Holy Days season and can’t wait to welcome you. One highlight: on Kol Nidre (Yom Kippur evening – October 1), we are thrilled to welcome the Divisi Strings Quartet to our bima, joining Daphnee Johnson, Kelly Dean, Andrew Lienhard, and our soloist (in her 8th year), Hannah Madeleine Goodman. Together, they will lift our spirits
higher than ever before.
