Perhaps we ought to rename this Sunday, May 12^th

"Mothering Day"?

For there is so much more to being a mother

Than the act of giving birth

Now I know as a man, I offer these words with a little bit of fear

For to suggest that giving birth is but a blip, an act that only lasts a moment or a day, may most certainly fall on deaf (or angry) ears

This is not what I wish to say

But instead, it is indeed nonetheless the attributes of mothering that raise this experience from the sublime to the heavenly

Mothering is the ultimately humble act of giving birth to the world

The tzimtzum (the self-modulating act) of love that allows a part of oneself, to become itself...

Mothering is the most loving act of offering safety and comfort, security and encouragement, even at the moments when their impulses are missing

Mothering is the sensation that nothing and no one else matters when one’s ducklings are in danger

And mothering is the recognition that nothing that arises to me couldn’t arise to another

It is the solemn discovery that the most godly act of all, is letting go and praying they will return

Mothering Day could be a day to reflect for all of us, women and men, and the many and varied gender identities of ROYGBIV

That what our world needs a whole helluvalot more of, is a feisty, courageous, brave, shame-resistant, mothering presence, channeled by every one of us, into a society with the capacity for an ever-breaking and healing heart

Let us find our way home to our mothers and to the mothering all of us so desperately need.
