Jewish Wisdom for Wacky Times

This is a three-part, unique intro to Judaism class for young adults.
September 6, 13, and 20 from 6:30 – 8 p.m. at Salento Café in Rice Village.

Despite our differences, we share a world that asks itself: what of anything good can possibly endure these wacky times? Basic Jewish principles can help us navigate through these kinds of complex moments and, all the while, provide a set of tools designed for flexibility and direction.

Join Rabbi Scott Hausman-Weiss on a three-part Jewish mission to discover how Judaism can help us and our loved ones thrive during unsettling times.

  • Dive 1 — Grounding. Stories are not just for bedtime anymore. In this first session, we will rediscover the people of the Hebrew Bible and the relevance of their stories to our own.
  • Dive 2 — Jewish Humor 101. As author Luis Alberto Urrea put it best, “Laughter is a virus that infects you with humanity.”  Jewish history — in so many ways — is challenging enough to make our tenacious survival the greatest punchline of all. Learn how Jewish humor has taken us this far.
  • Dive 3 — You Can Run but You Cannot Hide. You know it. There’s no way of getting around it. We’re going to have to talk about God, but here’s the thing: when the Jews introduced the world to God (according to author Thomas Cahill), they rejected the fundamentalist approach that any one person, idea, or expression could ever contain the infinite presence of the Divine.
